Google Business Profile (GBP) is what most patients see before they ever touch your website. The 3-pack on a "dentist near me" search is the single most valuable real estate in dental marketing - and it's free to claim. This is the playbook for getting in and staying in.
The three Local Pack ranking factors
- Relevance - how well your GBP matches the searcher's query (categories, services, name, description).
- Distance - proximity to the searcher. You can't change this, but you can rank in adjacent zones.
- Prominence - reviews (count, velocity, rating), backlinks, citations, engagement.
Of the three, review velocity (rate of new reviews) is the single biggest controllable signal in 2026.
Setup: the must-haves
Primary category
Set to "Dentist" for general practice. Use specific categories for specialties: "Cosmetic dentist", "Pediatric dentist", "Orthodontist", "Oral surgeon", "Periodontist", "Endodontist". The primary category is the strongest single relevance signal.
Secondary categories
Add 3-5 relevant secondary categories. Don't add 20 - Google will down-weight you for category spam. Common secondaries: "Dental clinic", "Emergency dental service", "Teeth whitening service", "Dental implants periodontist", "Dental hygienist".
NAP consistency
Name, Address, Phone must match exactly across GBP, your website footer, and every directory listing. "Dr. Smith Dentistry" vs "Smith Dental" vs "Dr. John Smith DDS" looks like three different businesses to Google.
Hours, including stat holidays
Wrong hours kill trust faster than anything. Set special hours for every stat holiday. If you're closed Christmas week, say so - don't let patients show up to a locked door.
Photos (drive 35%+ of GBP click-through)
Minimum 20, all real (no stock):
- Exterior: street view + signage close-up.
- Interior: reception, waiting area, hallway.
- Operatories: 3-5 different rooms.
- Team: smiling, in scrubs, real lighting.
- Equipment: digital X-ray, intraoral camera, CEREC if you have it.
- Before/after: with explicit patient consent and Google's policy compliance.
- Logo and cover photo (branded).
Add 2-3 new photos per month. Stale GBPs lose ranking.
Services - one entry per procedure
Fill out every dental service you offer as a separate entry, with its own description. This is one of the most underused ranking signals. Examples to include:
- Dental cleaning / hygiene
- Dental implants
- Invisalign / clear aligners
- Crowns and bridges
- Root canal therapy
- Wisdom teeth removal
- Teeth whitening
- Veneers
- Emergency dental care
- Sedation dentistry (if offered)
- Pediatric dentistry (if offered)
Posts (weekly, every week)
Google Posts decay after 7 days for "What's New" type and 14 days for offers. Post weekly minimum. Mix:
- Patient education ("What to expect at your first cleaning")
- Procedure spotlights ("Same-day crowns with CEREC - what it actually feels like")
- Team intros ("Meet Dr. Patel - 12 years of restorative experience")
- Community ("Sponsoring the Forest Hill Family Run this Saturday")
- Offers (new patient exam + cleaning + X-ray for $X)
Q&A - seed the questions you want answered
Most practices ignore the Q&A section. That's a mistake - patients can post questions and other patients answer them, often wrong. Seed the section yourself with the 10-15 most common questions, with your authoritative answer:
- "Do you accept [insurance plan name]?"
- "Do you offer same-day appointments?"
- "What forms of payment do you accept?"
- "Do you do emergency dental care?"
- "What languages do you speak?"
- "Is parking available?"
- "Do you treat children?"
Review velocity (the highest-leverage GBP work)
More than total review count, Google rewards recent reviews. A practice with 200 reviews and 0 in the last 60 days will lose to a practice with 80 reviews and 15 in the last 60 days. The fix: automate the ask.
- Trigger an SMS request within 30 minutes of every PMS checkout.
- Route 4-5 star sentiment to Google. Route 1-3 star to a private form.
- Aim for 5-15 new Google reviews per month. Sustained.
- Owner responds to every review within 48 hours.
Xcare's Review Generation module does this end to end - PMS-triggered, sentiment-routed, dashboard included.
Booking button - the actual conversion event
Enable the "Book" button and link it to real online scheduling that reads live PMS availability. "Request appointment" forms cut conversion in half. If you're paying Google to put your GBP in the 3-pack with Local Service Ads, a broken booking button is throwing money away.
Engagement signals Google rewards
- Click-through rate from GBP to website
- "Get directions" clicks
- Phone call clicks
- Booking button clicks
- Photo views
These are tracked. Practices with higher engagement out-rank practices with similar proximity and review counts. Photos and posts drive engagement more than anything else.
